This position is an executive command member of the Police Department. It performs a variety of complex administrative, supervisory and professional public safety assistance work in planning, coordinating and directing operational activities of the department. This position works under the guidance and direction of the Associate Vice Chancellor of Public Safety.

Supervises the daily operations of the police department
Organizes and directs the work activities of deputy chiefs
Organizes and directs the work activities of accreditation
Monitors work and ensures compliance with policies
Supervises complex criminal and/or other investigations
Delegates appropriate responsibilities for planning, organizing, directing, staffing and evaluating subordinates throughout department
Mentor staff in preparation for succession planning
Directs and coordinates large venue events
Recommends and implements new department programs
Provides and improves departmental training for staff
Prepares or directs the preparation of required reports
Represents department in campus, city and state meetings
Attends conferences to remain current on trends in the field
Reviews and approves purchase/bids
Builds strong relationships with community & external law enforcement
Coordinates emergency management activities for department
Assumes activities of Chief of Police when applicable
Coordinates special projects as assigned internal/external to department
Performs related work as required

Position Qualifications:
Must be 21 years of age minimum. Eight years of law enforcement experience, preferably with a campus law enforcement department. Minimum of five years supervisory experience. Command level leadership training. Bachelor’s Degree required. TN post certified within one year of employment.

Ability to analyze situations quickly and to determine proper course of action. Ability to comprehend and carry out directives. Ability to successfully complete required annual in service training. Ability to work in a multicultural setting.

Good written and verbal communication skills. Customer service skills. Active listening skills.
Knowledge of department and University policy. Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws. Positive interpersonal skills. Problem solving skills.

Valid TN Driver’s License is required. Although typically assigned to day-shift, the position may be required to work evening shifts. Assignments & shifts are made based on the needs of the department and are subject to change. Continued annual check of sex offender registry and criminal history will occur. Must remain in good standing with TN POST Commission. Position subject to quarterly random drug screen.

Master’s Degree. Administrative skills preferred. Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite programs preferred.

Selection Process:

Upon receipt of an online application, the Office of Human Resources will forward qualified candidates to the Associate Vice Chancellor of Public Safety or his designee. An Oral Review Committee will be established and may consist of personnel internal and external to UT Public Safety. The Associate Vice Chancellor of Public Safety will make the final selection for this position.
