ROLE of the POSITION

University Police Services is conducting a continuous recruitment for current and future openings for University Police Sergeant – POST Certified. Positions may be assigned to any campus to include the College of Southern Nevada, Desert Research Institute, Nevada State College, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

The position is responsible for supervising an assigned staff of officers to include planning activities, development and implementation of departmental goals, evaluation, discipline, and training. The position will patrol, conduct investigations, enforce laws and write reports among other duties. The typical schedule is varied; this is subject to change based on organizational needs. Applicants must be willing to work any shift, weekends, and holidays.

Department Information

The department is a full-service police department comprised of patrol operations, administration, police dispatch and a detective division. Services include a canine program, walking and bicycle patrols, and a pro-active, selective traffic enforcement program and takes a leadership role in preparing the University to respond to large-scale crises and events. The department consists of 80 employees (42 full-time sworn officers, 10 sworn part-time, 8 non-sworn part-time, 24 students, and 20 full & part-time civilian support staff). Testing Notice

QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of journey level law enforcement experience; OR an Associate of Arts Degree or equivalent coursework in criminal justice, psychology, police science or closely related field and one year of journey level law enforcement experience; OR two years of experience as a University Police Officer II in Nevada State service.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Must have successfully completed and maintain a Category 1 Peace Officer’s Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) Academy Certification or equivalent out of State Police Academy as authorized by Nevada P.O.S.T.

SALARY

Grade 40 Step 1, salary $63,746.64. “Step” means the number assigned by the Division of Human Resource Management to identify a specific rate of pay within a grade. Per Nevada Administrative Code (NAC 284.170), salaries for initial appointments for classified positions typically begin at Step 1.
