Primary Purpose of the Position
It is the responsiblity of this position to maintain a highly professional and competent team of sworn law enforcement officers on campus, who are dedicated to providing a safe environment for all members of the university community, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In addition to administrative, budgetary and supervisory duties, this position is responsible for the following: directing criminal investigations; developing rules and regulations for parking and traffic management; establishing programs for crime and accident prevention; providing security for student housing and special events; crisis and emergency response coordination; and ensuring that mandatory training for all officers is conducted. This position will also serve as the spokesperson for the university with regard to safety and security issues, and therefore, it is very important that he/she develops and maintains good public relations and communications with city, county and state law enforcement and emergency management agencies.

Position may have to occasionally work weekends for special events such as, athletic events, homecoming events, etc.

Department Required Skills
Must have advanced certification as a law enforcement officer by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards commission.
Strong leadership skills that have been developed by working in a position of Chief, Deputy Chief or similar capacity in a law enforcement environment. Must be proficient in state & federal laws, statues and regulatory requirements; Proficient in directing criminal investigations, The Clery Act, establishing programs for campus crime, security and accident prevention. Ability to develop a highly professional team of sworn law enforcement officers who are dedicated to providing a safe campus environment.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Minimum Bachelors Degree-
Minimum of 3 years in law enforcement in a Senior level position.
Must have advanced certification as a law enforcement officer by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards commission. Candidate must meet and pass physical, psychological, and drug tests as required by the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. Must pass sworn law enforcement officer background investigation, including but not limited to driving record and criminal history.

Required License or Certification
Must have certification as a law enforcement officer by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards commission, or immediately eligible to obtain certification. Advanced certification is preferred. Candidate must meet and pass physical, psychological, and drug tests as required by the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. Must pass sworn law enforcement officer background investigation, including but not limited to driving record and criminal history.

The director’s main responsiblity is to ensure a safe environment for all faculty, staff, students and visitors of the university. This position is responsible for developing rules and regulations for parking and traffic management; establishing programs for crime and accident prevention; providing security for student housing and special events along with crisis and emergency response coordination.

It is imperative that the Director of Public Safety develop and maintain a good relationship and communications with city, county and state law enforcement and emergency management agencies. This is necessary since the director will be the main spokesperson for the university as it relates to public safety issues.

It is imperative that the person in this position stay abreast of all changes in state and federal laws and regulatory requirements. This must be done so that new information regarding changes in policy and procedures can be communicated to personnel via training classes or departmental meetings.

Personnel Management – The director will be responsible for interviewing, selecting and hiring all law enforcement officers. Developing and implementing work plans and the subsequent performance reviews. The director oversees the implementation of disciplinary actions and provides counsel and advice to subordinate personnel. Since the Public Safety office is a twenty-four hour, seven days a week operation, the director must plan and supervisor various shifts with the assistance of his immediate subordinates within the department.
