Widener University is currently seeking an Executive Director of Campus Safety. This role provides leadership for the overall administration and management of the Department of Campus Safety. The Executive Director serves as the primary resource and advisor to the university on matters related to campus safety.
Reporting to the Senior Vice President for Administration and Finance, this role is responsible for the comprehensive operations of the university’s Campus Safety Department at all three of Widener’s campuses. This position provides administrative and operational guidance for a 24-hour/365 days a year department, including direction and supervision of officers, patrol, and dispatch personnel. The department consists of approximately 65 full-time and part-time officers supporting all three campuses.
Widener University’s main campus has an enrollment of 6,500 students in undergraduate and graduate programs, and is minutes outside of Philadelphia located in Chester, Pennsylvania. Widener is a vibrant residential and commuter student community and has over 1,000 students enrolled in the Delaware Law School (Wilmington) and Commonwealth Law School (Harrisburg).
Duties and Responsibilities: (include but are not limited to)
Creates and executes a strategic vision of the department.
Develops and implements a training and education program for staff and the university community.
Develops and implements comprehensive public safety programs, policies, and procedures.
Manages and supervises the Campus Safety Department, dispatch operations, and staff of a 24/7/365 unit. This includes hiring, training, professional development, direction and supervision.
Communicates regularly with appropriate campus leaders on emergencies, plans of action, operations, and administration.
Develops and maintains excellent working relationships with students, faculty, staff and external constituents (including but not limited to local police, community and other related stakeholders).
Collaborates with essential stakeholders throughout campus (Student Affairs, Faculty, Athletics, and Human Resources).
Takes an active role in the University’s Behavioral Intervention Team (CARE).
Prepares and reports crimes in federal and state crime logs.
Plans for safety services for special events.
Ensures compliance with reporting requirements for the Clery Act.
Has working knowledge of Title IX, the Violence Against Women Act and other federal, state and local crime regulations and reporting requirements.
Prepares and administers the departmental budget, plans and implements department’s safety operations, programs, and initiatives in support of Widener’s mission.
Collaborates with local officials to address matters of mutual concern.
Coordinates with internal/external emergency response protocols and/or agencies.
Coordinates fire safety reports and protocols.
Coordinates logistics regarding supplies and uniforms.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: (Education/Training and Experience Required):
Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, business administration, or other related field.
Minimum of 10 years of experience in security or law enforcement in a management capacity.
Minimum five years of supervisory experience.
Applicable managerial and practical experience to lead a 24/7/365 day environment.
Experience in addressing the needs and interests of diverse populations.
Excellent interpersonal, problem solving, organizational and communication skills.
Technology literacy in reporting software and Microsoft office suite.
Excellent communication verbal and written communication skills.
Strong public speaking and presentation skills.
Demonstrated ability to build relationships on campus and in community.
Thorough knowledge of Uniform Crime Report definitions.
Understanding of, and appreciation for current student issues.
Ability to handle crisis situations.
Graduate or advanced degree.
Prior experience working in the higher education environment.
Maxient or other related reporting software.
Experience working in safety and security in a higher education setting.
Physical Demands or Unusual Working Conditions:
Ability to respond, in a timely manner, as senior level support for guidance in emergencies, and provide the required direction.
Interpret policies and regulations of the University in all situations.
