Public Safety Director (Assistant Chief of Police)

This position represents the upper level of management for the Western Carolina University Police Department. This position is expected to demonstrate and practice supervisory and administrative skills that is not only under the direction of the Chief of Police, but is also independent of such direction in their absence. Duties include, but are not limited to, planning, organizing and directing specific department functions, developing and reviewing programs and activities, working with prosecuting attorneyâ??s, courts, and the Department of Student Community Ethics or residential Living, assisting with the budget process and serves as grant coordinator, managing personnel issues, overseeing departmentâ??s assessment program, managing departmentâ??s inventory, and performing other duties as assigned. This position will function at the Advanced Competency Level.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and two years of progressive supervisory/managerial public safety experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
