The University of Virginia (UVA) seeks applicants for the newly created position of Deputy Chief of Police. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President & Chief of Police, the Deputy Chief of Police provides leadership to the University of Virginia Police Department and performs direct oversight of the police department Field Services and Support Services Bureaus. The Deputy Chief of Police functions as a key member of the Command Staff and assists in making critical management decisions. Disseminates information regarding significant police related events or activities to department and university leadership; prepares and reviews activity reports to be delivered to management. Willingly participates and provides input during periodic management meetings to keep top management informed of problems and concerns. The incumbent provides direct management of all patrol and investigative activities of the police department utilizing best practices in campus law enforcement, and effective crime prevention, suppression and investigative methods. Oversight includes activities within the police department jurisdiction on Grounds and the University Medical Center, including campus properties and non-campus properties.

Required Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s Degree
A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience.
A Virginia Police Certification or the ability to attain within first 6 months of employment required.
A Virginia Driver’s License with a positive points balance or the ability to obtain a valid Virginia driver’s license within 60 days of appointment.
Successful experience in management, budgeting, planning, supervision, and training.
Demonstrated experience planning for and managing large scale critical incidents.
Demonstrated experience developing programs, including crime prevention programs and programs designed to mitigate and deter criminal activity.
Ability to diplomatically lead police operations and sustain a high level of service delivery when interacting with department and community members.
Considerable knowledge of principles of crime prevention and problem solving, community policing, campus law enforcement operations, and emergency management.
Advanced knowledge of the principles of the Incident Command System and National Incident Management System.
Ability to work with people of various ages and backgrounds and with diverse constituencies, including students, parents, faculty, and staff in the university.
Ability and skill to build consensus and credibility across the campus.
Preferred Qualifications:
At least 5 years of supervisory experience overseeing police operations within a campus law enforcement department.
Experience leading department-wide community engagement.
Completion of the FBI National Academy or similar advanced public safety management program.
