The Office of Safety and Security is hiring a new Director beginning in January, 2020. The director provides leadership and is responsible for all elements of the office of safety and security including supervising a team of officers and radio dispatchers who staff the operation 24 hours/day, seven days/week. In addition, the director is “on call” as the emergency coordinator for the university and is responsible for developing and executing response protocols to various situations on campus. The director needs to be knowledgeable of Indiana State and Federal law, and must be able to facilitate a strong partnership with local law enforcement, Indiana Excise, and other universities in Indiana. The director must be able to make timely decisions regarding situations and their level of risk to the campus community. This includes coordinating the institutional emergency response plan, providing Ace Alerts and timely warnings as appropriate, partnering with local authorities (fire and police), conducting timely investigations, referring students for disciplinary action when appropriate, developing policies and procedures as appropriate, and providing training for employees, students and visitors on public safety.
The director is also responsible for complying with the Department of Education regulations as it relates to the Clery Act and other federal legislation. This includes overseeing a comprehensive reporting system that provides daily crime logs and reportable statistics in the Annual Security Report. The director collaborates with Indiana University and the University of Southern Indiana in providing appropriate safety measures and Clery reporting for students attending classes at the Stone Center for Health Sciences. The director also works closely with Harlaxton College, the British campus of the University of Evansville, in responding to issues of safety and security and Clery reporting.
Administratively, the director is responsible for budget management, performance reviews, and public service announcements relative to safety. The director works collaboratively with various administrative offices including, but not limited to, technology services, facilities, residence life, student engagement and student financial services. The director reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs and is part of the Student Life division.
A bachelor’s degree or the equivalent professional experience in law enforcement is required for this position. The successful candidate will have direct experience in supervision, training, preparing reports, and an understanding of state and federal law. The successful candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills and be able to effectively supervise and provide direction to officers, radio dispatchers, etc. The successful candidate should be very detail – oriented, computer savvy, strong in public relations and be knowledgeable of regulations specific to higher education public safety and reporting requirements. The successful candidate should be a self – starter, take initiative, be a critical thinker, excellent listener and have a strong commitment to the mission and values of the university.
