Excellent supervisory and management skills.
Excellent communication and writing skills.
Working knowledge of the personal computer.
Ability to deal with the public in person and over the phone.
Self-motivation and the ability to complete projects on a timely basis.
Knowledge and understanding of UPD’s general orders, duties, and responsibilities of units within the Department.
Ability to work with other faculty, staff, and student organizations, other Departments within the University Community.
Ability to work any schedule, including weekends and holidays as needed.
Ability to work with other organizations outside the University Community structure.
Maintain at least an Advanced T.C.O.L.E. Peace Officer certification.

Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or related field.
Master’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or related field.
Four years’ Experience as a first line police supervisor.
Two years’ experience as a Sergeant with the Texas State University Police Department or Texas State University System
Two years’ experience in a management position within a police department
80 hours of law enforcement leadership training (Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas, FBI LEEDA, FBI Academy, etc.)

Job Description
The Criminal Investigations Lieutenant position in the University Police Department reports to the Operations Captain and supervises the Investigations, Administrative Sergeant, and Evidence functions.

Job Duties
Ensures the Operations Captain is aware of any critical issues that arise during the daily operations of the Department.
Maintains liaison with faculty, staff and students on university issues, departmental administrative issues, and legislative issues that affect their areas of the department.
Reviews and briefs the Operations Captain on patrol functions.
Attends meetings with university personnel that may affect their area of command.
Receives, reviews, and disseminates all in-coming correspondence that deals with their area of command.
Serves as the Operations Captain’s representative and contact person for Civic and University Community Groups as needed.
Handle patrol complaints as appropriate.
Liaison with other law enforcement agencies
Maintain critical incident / newsworthy event file.
Handle projects as assigned by the Operations Captain.
Perform all additional tasks assigned by the Operations Captain.
