The Police Cadet, under supervision, attends a basic police training program conducted by the Texas Engineering Extension Service Law Enforcement Training Division and includes one week of departmental orientation.
Required Education and Experience:
High School diploma or GED. 45 college credit hours from an accredited college or university or an equivalent combination of education and experience. College credit hours are defined as semester hour credit earned while enrolled and completed at an accredited college or university on a certified transcript from the original crediting higher education institution. Workforce education credits do not fulfill this requirement. (Each year of continuous experience as a commissioned law enforcement officer in the state of Texas and/or each year of active duty in a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces may be substituted for ten (10) college credit hours. A maximum of 30 college credit hours may be substituted. A minimum of 15 college credit hours from an accredited college or university is required.)
Two years of full-time employment experience (a baccalaureate or higher degree may substitute for two years of full-time employment experience – if degree is in progress, degree must be received prior to start date) OR Four years of part-time experience.
Upon employment, applicant must complete the basic police academy and pass the required State of Texas police licensing exam. Applicant must pass an entrance exam to be considered for employment.
Must have a State of Texas class “C” vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate effectively with all segments of the campus population.
Ability to function under adverse and stressful conditions.
Requires ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
Applicant must pass an entrance exam to be considered for employment.
Must be in excellent physical health and stamina.
Applicant must successfully pass psychological evaluation, physical examination, and complete background investigation to include but not limited to driving history, criminal background, and credit history.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Previous experience in a college or university environment and experience dealing with the public.
Attends a basic police training program and a Texas A&M University Police Department orientation course, which requires operating a university vehicle.
Participates in intensive classroom instruction programs and practical exercises.
Performs other duties as assigned.
