The Colorado Mental Health Institute in Pueblo (CMHIP) is a state operated, 438-bed inpatient psychiatric hospital serving persons with serious mental illness, including a 200-bed High Security Forensic Institute.

Job Assignment :
The Police Officer I provides a safe secure environment for all persons on the grounds of the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo (CMHIP) and within the surrounding community by enforcing state statutes, traffic laws and security rules adn regulations within jurisdiction.
Solve crimes by investigating and making written reports of incidents, criminal and otherwise, involving employees, patients and visitors within the Department Jurisdiction.
Enforce traffic codes by issuing, citations and summons to violators and investigating traffic accidents.
Provide law enforcement assistance to Unit staff of all divisions by responding to emergency calls in the event of violent, dangerous confrontations with combative patients.
Complete Unit/Ward checks.
Deter crime by using Preventative Patrol Techniques and arrest powers within jurisdiction authority.
Transport patients to and from the Arapahoe County Detention Program in Support of the RISE program.
Arrange and transport patients and inmates to and from courts, hospitals, clinics and jails by assigning and directing Officers as escorts in the absence of Police Officer II and III.
Interpret policies and regulations to subordinate officers and other personnel, visitors and patients by explaining verbally or in writing for clarification purpose in the absence of Police Officer II and III.
Check and ensure sufficient staff coverage for all shifts.
On occasion, may be required to assume command officer duties in the absence of the Police Officer II and/or Police Officer III depending on business needs.
Performs other related duties as assigned or required
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
Possession of current Colorado P.O.S.T. certification (Must submit a copy of your Colorado Post Certificate with your application),
One year of law enforcement experience.
Must be at least 21 years of age; possess a valid Colorado Driver License (Must submit a copy of our Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) dated within the last 30 days to you to your application), and no:
Domestic violence convictions
Acquiring more than seven points in the last year and/or more than 12 points within the last two years on a driver’s license.
Alcohol/drug related traffic convictions in the last three years and repeat alcohol/drug convictions after the age of 18 within the last ten years.
Appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Knowledge of CRS. 27-65 statues; CMS Regulations, and The Joint Commission standards as they apply to the Department of Public Safety
Associates of Applied Science or related field.
Experience dealing with persons with mental illness
Ability to demonstrate problem-solving abilities
Effective communication skills, both written and oral
Previous experience working in a facility that serves mentally challenged individuals.
Able to work autonomously
Able to demonstrate ability to write reports for required elements to support appropriate charges.
Demonstrate utilization of team building skills.
Work in collaboration with other disciplines throughout CMHIP, to meet Mission and Vision of both the Institute and Department of Public Safety.
Support the Chain of Command of the Department of Public Safety as well as other Departments of CMHIP
Conditions of Employment:
Must posses a valid Colorado Driver’s License
Must pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening
Must be available for shift work (may be pulled to other shifts)
Must pass psychological evaluation test
Must pass polygraph test
Must pass physical battery test

The selection process will consist primarily of a review of applications against the minimum and preferred qualifications of this position.
