Position Summary

Lead, supervise, direct and mentor staff members of assigned division. Maintain a working knowledge and proficiency of all Police operations. Maintain a working knowledge of federal and state laws, and university and departmental rules and regulations. Responsible for maintaining and evaluating current departmental General Orders. Identify the need for and develop policies and procedures for the coordination of departmental programs. Promote and participate in the departmental Community Policing philosophy. Provide support to the Administrative Operations (AO) Group with regard to emergency planning and response, including special projects, as requested by the Chief of Police. Serve in community outreach role on behalf of PUPD and AO. Coordinate requests for police services and educational programming. Comply with all local, State, and Federal mandated reporting. Value diversity by working effectively with people from different viewpoints and backgrounds. Required to carry a cell phone for business purposes. Subject to 24-hour callback for emergencies. Working conditions and hours may vary.

Qualifications

Required:
Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Public Safety or related field
6+ years of working experience in a progressive, sworn, police department on a college campus with supervisory experience
An equivalent combination of education and related work experience will be considered
Must have a strong working knowledge of Constitutional law, criminal and traffic codes, University rules and regulations and Departmental policies and procedures
Must have knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership technique and coordination of people and resources
Must be able to lead, take charge and offer opinions and direction
Must be able to deal calmly and effectively with high stress situations
Must have the ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
Must have a demonstrated ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships, build mutual trust and respect with others while holding personnel accountable for their actions and activities
Must have a high standard of integrity, performance and professional behavior.
Strong verbal and written communication skills
The ability to achieve consensus and work in a team oriented environment
A strong commitment to customer service
Must be able to obtain and maintain Indiana Police Officer certification including completion of 24 hours of continuing education annually
Must be physically and mentally capable of performing all duties of a police officer
Must successfully complete the Purdue Police officer Physical Abilities Test annually
Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Indiana Driver’s license

Preferred:
One year of supervisory experience on a college campus
Experience as a Purdue University Police supervisor
