The university police officer is a member of the University Police Department, which serves and protects the campus community.
The officer is responsible for maintaining a secure environment; mitigating safety hazards; being observant and responding to actual and suspected criminal activity on campus; maintaining a positive relationship with the university community; controlling and regulating traffic; and investigating security, safety, crime, and traffic incidents.
The university police officer is dedicated to educating, mentoring, and contributing to the success of the university community.
The incumbent is a sworn peace officer with primary responsibility for protecting life and property at Northern Kentucky University. Examples of responsibilities required to complete this task include, but are not limited to:
Patrolling assigned areas on foot, bicycle, or motor vehicle;
Observing and responding to actual and suspected criminal activity;
Promptly, clearly, and concisely completing a variety of written incident, offense, and ancillary reports in a grammatically correct manner and in accordance with established best practices;
Deterring crime and arresting violators as prescribed by Kentucky Revised Statutes;
Responding to emergency alarms and dispatched calls for service;
Communicating with supervisors, peers, and all stakeholders in a courteous, culturally-adroit manner that models the University Police core values, while providing an outstanding customer service experience.
1) High school diploma or equivalent;
2) 21 years of age at the time of appointment;
3) Valid driver’s license;
4) Any candidate offered this position is required pass a thorough background check.
5) The successful candidate will be required to demonstrate competent solo patrol and investigative abilities by satisfying the knowledge and performance-based benchmarks set forth in the supervised Field Training Observation & Evaluation program.
We VERY STRONGLY prefer:
6) Certification as a peace officer from the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council (KLEC)
Eligibility for out-of-state reciprocity through KLEC by having completed a police academy which certified you to be a peace officer in that state AND having one year of experience as a FULL TIME, PAID police officer in that state.
NOTE: KLEC determines ultimate eligibility for out-of-state reciprocity following a review of a candidate’s basic training information and confirmation that it meets or exceeds Kentucky’s standards at the time the basic course/academy was completed.
Per KLEC, if the police academy was completed after December 1, 1998, the applicant must meet all 17 Peace Officer Professional Standards including successful completion of the physical agility test.
