The North Carolina State University Police Department is responsible for providing the most reasonable level of safety and security for the protection of life and property of students, faculty, staff and visitors of the campus community. The North Carolina State University Police department functions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year round with sworn officers, non-sworn full-time employees and part-time employees.
Essential Job Duties
Prevent and suppress crime, protect life and property, preserve peace, and respond to police service requests to include but not limited to, criminal reports, 911 calls, medical assists, fire and intrusion alarm activation’s, motorist assists, building lock outs, safety escorts, etc within the department’s jurisdiction in a manner that reflects and preserves human dignity.
All selected candidates will have to undergo an extensive background investigation, psychological testing, EQI Testing (emotional intelligence), polygraph examination, medical examination, physical fitness testing (POPAT), drug and TB testing, and FBI fingerprint criminal check.
Supervisory positions conduct interviews, make final hiring decisions, provide salary recommendations, monitor and assign work, counsel and discipline employees under direct supervision, develop work plans and conduct performance appraisals for PERMANENT employees
High school diploma, or possession of a high school equivalency certificate and two years of law enforcement experience. Additional Education and Experience will be necessary for progressive steps (Journey and Advanced).
Necessary Special Qualifications:
Certification as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.
Departmental Required Skills
Applicants must be able to wear and use personal protective equipment.
Applicants must successfully pass the North Carolina Police Officer Physical Abilities Test (POPAT) prior to final offer of employment and must be able to pass the POPAT biannually as a condition of employment.
Ability to manage and direct employees in general patrol, traffic and investigative work
Knowledge of staff availability, skill and resources to make assignments
Ability to establish and communicate work expectations
Ability to review and asses employees’ performance
Excellent time management – accomplishes tasks in designated time
Advanced knowledge of criminal and traffic law to ensure consistent enforcement of those laws
Knowledge of investigative techniques and case preparation for sensitive and complex cases
Knowledge of standard law enforcement equipment, its care, and safe use according to department general orders
Ability to conduct thorough inspections and maintain standards in accordance with department general orders
Understands and effectively applies problem oriented policing
Ability to communicate openly and effectively through oral and written communication and ensures the message is understood
Ability to employ accepted conflict resolution and mediation techniques
Ability to deliver presentations that are suited to the characteristics and needs of the audience
Uses and models active listening, encourages others to express their views, solicits their input and effectively responds to their concerns
Responds with empathy
Treats others with respect and dignity
Formally and informally recognizes employees for exemplary performance and accomplishments
Knowledge of and ability to apply Clery requirements
Ability to recognize emerging issues and inform the chain of command

Understands internal issues impacting the department: conducts scanning of members assigned by riding/patrolling with each assigned member once every six months

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
It is preferred that Sergeants have 2 years of college education or possess an Associate’s Degree
Required License or Certification
Sergeants must have Intermediate Law Enforcement Certification
Valid North Carolina driver’s license required prior to appointment
