Police Sergeant – Georgetown University Police Department (GUPD)
The Georgetown University Police Department (GUPD) , serving more than 14,000 students, approximately 1,200 faculty members and nearly 2,500 staff in 54 buildings covering 104 acres on the hilltop, is committed to helping maintain a safe and secure environment on Georgetown University’s main campus. GUPD provides event management, crime prevention, and police services on the Georgetown University Main and Medical Center campuses and off campus properties. Utilizing foot patrols, vehicles, and bicycles, the officers patrol the campus twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
The Police Sergeant serves as Watch Commander during his or her tour of duty and supervises patrol officers assigned to provide safety and security to the Georgetown University Main Campus and Medical Center; ensures compliance with appropriate written and verbal orders of the Chief of GUPD and other designated supervisors (including the Deputy Chief and Lieutenants) for all security, police, safety and traffic matters occurring on and around Georgetown University property; directs the work activities of subordinate employees assigned to him or her and consults with other designated immediate supervisor on appropriate decisions; serves as initial Incident Commander on-scene during incidents and emergencies until relieved by superior; authorizes and sends emergency notifications to the University Community during critical events, in the absence of an on-scene superior. Investigates crimes and incidents as they come under their purview. Engages in community policing and crime prevention activities. May be assigned to other special assignments (including, but not limited to Investigations or Crime Prevention Program). Duties include but are not limited to:

Directs the work activities of subordinate employees assigned to him or her and consults with other designated immediate supervisor on appropriate decisions.
Serves as initial Incident Commander on-scene during incidents and emergencies until relieved by superior.
Authorizes and sends emergency notifications to the University Community during critical events, in the absence of an on-scene superior.
Investigates crimes and incidents as they come under their purview. Engages in community policing and crime prevention activities.
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution of higher learning in criminal justice or related field Required.
Minimum of 5 years law enforcement experience related to public safety, including at least 1 year of supervisory experience.
Previous experience in and responsibility for critical incident response and notification procedures desired.
Previous experience and/or training in situations involving sexual assault and discrimination (including religious, racial, and sexual orientation) a plus.
An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered in lieu of above requirements.
Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with no violations in the last three years and able to pass Georgetown University driver’s certification.
All applicants are subject to a written test, a report writing test, drug test, physical examination by a medical doctor to University specifications, and extensive psychological testing. Must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation.
Must also qualify for a Special Police Officer’s Commission.
Must be comfortable using computers including Microsoft Word, Excel, and email and/or the ability to learn these applications is essential. Knowledge of telecommunications equipment is desirable. Administrative and clerical skills are a plus.
Must possess intermediate knowledge of criminal and civil law and of police practices and procedures.
Must possess tact, patience, a courteous demeanor and pleasant personality in order to deal with students, staff, faculty, visitors, and community members. Must respect the use of police powers in relation to a University environment. Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including report writing, are essential.
Position is considered as essential under the University Personnel policy guidelines and therefore is subject to be on call when necessary. Must be willing to work extended, odd, or off hours to achieve the expectations of the Department. This may include rotating tours of duty (day shifts, evening shifts, overnight shifts) with fluctuating days off, according to departmental needs.
Some training in law enforcement operations and investigative procedures; previous experience and responsibility for critical incident response and notification procedures; previous experience and/or training in situations involving sexual assault and discrimination (including religious, racial, and sexual orientation)
Experience and/or certified training as an investigator to include Crime Scene and Death Investigations, evidence/property collection and preservation, interview/interrogation, latent fingerprint collection, and overt/covert electronic surveillance techniques. NCIC certification or eligibility for certification; demonstrated ability to conduct interviews and investigate complex cases; ability to testify in grand juries, hearings, and trials; and prepare affidavits, warrants, and investigative reports
Knowledge of: court system; modern police practices; crime investigation methods; presentation of physical evidence; principles and practices of police supervision; GUPD regulations, policies, and procedures; and University policies and procedures
Ability to explain and interpret provision of laws, ordinances, and regulations; prior training and experience in Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) and risk evaluations a plus; solid understanding of Jeanne Clery Act
Working Conditions and Physical Demands: Very Heavy: Daily requirements to move items up to 20lbs of weight. Frequently required over 50lbs of weight and walk or stand with operation of controls. Occasionally tasked with moving items weighing over 100lbs.
