Reporting to the Vice President for Business, Finance and Technology, the Chief of Police and Director of Campus Safety (Chief) will manage the functional, administrative, personnel and financial responsibilities for a 24 hour/365 days a year Campus Police Department. The Chief is responsible for a unit which includes Elon’s Campus Police Department and has 22 sworn officers. This unit is a NC certified unit under statute G.S. 74-G.
Additionally, the Chief will provide leadership for the following areas: campus safety and fire programs, emergency response, security escorts, property protection programs, parking and parking enforcement. The Department of Campus Safety and Police, includes 42 full-time and 1 part-time staff person.

Education Requirements

The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) with 10 years of experience with federal, state, municipal or university police with preference given to applicants who have previous university police experience. The ability to demonstrate the highest degree of judgment and community engagement with multiple constituencies is a requirement. The Chief must have or be able to quickly obtain NC certification as a law enforcement officer.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Chief is responsible for a unit which includes Elon’s Campus Police Department which has 22 sworn officers. This unit is a NC certified unit under statute G.S. 74-G.

It is essential to develop and sustain collaborative working relationships that foster trust and support among constituencies on and off campus, including students, faculty, staff, parents and others. The Chief must possess the ability to motivate, mentor and evaluate employees and the capacity to provide an open, transparent leadership environment that emphasizes employee engagement, promotes diversity, encourages positive morale, and promotes effective employee development within the department while being committed to the University’s mission. The Chief must be able to effectively collaborate across academic and administrative departments.

Additionally, the chief must exhibit levels of high integrity, accountability, including having difficult development conversations with employees when required. The Chief must have a commitment to serving and supporting a diverse campus community. The department is accredited under the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators and the Chief will need to ensure continued accreditation.
