Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The primary purpose of this University Police Department is to enforce local and state laws and to protect lives and university property; patrol the campus to prevent crimes through high visibility; investigate crimes occurring on the campus; and respond to emergency situations.

Sworn officers within the police department have the powers and authority vested in peace officers as authorized by the General Statutes of North Carolina. Such powers and authorities are granted for the purpose of enforcing North Carolina state laws, 74G, preserving peace at the University, suppressing disturbances, preventing crimes, and apprehending offenders.

Description of Work
Multiple positions may be filled from this posting.

This position will provide law enforcement services and functions to the University community by maintaining high visibility patrol; enforcing local, state, and federal laws and regulations; providing public service to students, staff, faculty, and visitors on the campus; conducting preliminary and follow-up law enforcement/criminal investigations; preparation of written and computerized reports with specific, accurate, and comprehensive data; presentation of evidence in criminal proceedings, hearings, trials, and University administrative hearings; checking the security of physical structures on the campus and reporting any breaches or mechanical defects that create a potential security risk; working special events as requested. Attendance at training is required.

Competencies/Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position
Knowledge (Technical): Knowledge and understanding of commander role during special events. Knowledge of investigative techniques and case preparation requirements for more serious traffic and criminal cases, generally felonies or fatalities. Knowledge of criminal and traffic laws in processing of crime scenes. Ability to plan and develop community programs. Ability to conduct security surveys, crime prevention programs and safety and self-defense training.

Communication Skills: Ability to develop/design presentations and training materials. Ability to employ formal conflict resolution and mediation skills.

Organizational Awareness and Commitment: Ability to develop new officers by conducting field-training program.

Problem Solving: Ability to identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.

Analytical and Conceptual Thinking: Ability to regularly perform detailed and advanced assignments without direct supervisory intervention.

Minimum Training and Experience
High School Diploma or equivalency. Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment. Additional education and experience will be necessary for progressive steps (Journey and Advanced).
