Duties are numbered for convenience, and do not indicate order in terms of importance, frequency that the duty is performed, or the amount of time spent on the duty.

1) Serves student body, faculty and general public. Patrols campus property by foot, bicycle or vehicle. Offers and provides assistance and maintains good public relations.

2) Monitors, reports and responds to out of place or unusual occurrences, crimes, emergencies, violations, safety or traffic hazards, security conditions and other situations.

3) Responds to and handles high-risk calls and alarms. Takes appropriate action at the scene. Apprehends and arrests suspects in violation of laws and ordinances. Provides assistance and public service to students, faculty and others.

4) Safeguards against violence, theft, vandalism and other criminal behavior. Enforces state laws and campus policy, procedures, rules and regulations. Assists in lockouts and secures campus buildings.

5) Conducts criminal and accident investigations. Collects and identifies evidence, questions victims and witnesses, prepares evidence for presentation in court and testifies in court proceedings when necessary. Arrests, detains and transports suspects. Reports minor infractions. Writes warnings, citations and incident reports for review by Director and disciplinary board.

6) Serves as initial responder for medical emergencies. Administers CPR, performs first aid, operates Automated Electronic Defibrillator (AED) and secures ambulatory service.

7) Enforces traffic and parking laws. Regulates traffic flow and monitors parking lots for suspicious vehicles. Issues citations for parking violations including decal infractions, expired meters and other violations in accordance with campus parking regulation manual.

8) Inputs and updates incident report information.

9) Keeps accurate records. Completes and maintains required documentation including daily log, alarm reports, incident reports and complaints.

10) Maintains confidentiality of student files and investigations, and maintains incident reports and other sensitive information.

11) Works assigned schedule, exhibits regular and predictable attendance and works overtime as required to meet workload demands. Performs other related duties as required.

12) Performs special detail assignments (e.g. community engagement, crime prevention and other duties). Performs other law enforcement responsibilities as required.

Usual Physical Demands: The incumbent of this position typically exhibits the physical demands identified in the Functional Job Analysis on file in the College’s Human Resources Department and which is periodically reviewed and updated. Physical demands listed in the Functional Job Analysis are not job qualification standards, but are used to help the College assess and determine reasonable accommodations for otherwise qualified individuals covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

While performing job duties, the employee will regularly ride in a cruiser or on a bicycle and patrol the campus on foot for extended periods of time. The employee occasionally uses hands to handle and operate equipment. The employee occasionally reaches with hands and arms, climbs and balances, and stoops, kneels, crouches or crawls. The employee regularly uses usual vision demands and must be able to converse verbally in a professional manner with students, faculty, staff, and general public, and to hear. Employee occasionally lifts or exerts force of 50 pounds on items or individuals.

Working Conditions: Normal working conditions with regular exposure to dirt, dust debris and smells. Employee is occasionally exposed to wet, humid and other outdoor conditions. Occasional exposure to extreme cold or heat unrelated to weather conditions. Employee is occasionally exposed to minor cuts, burns or other incapacitating injury with risk of electrical shock or exposure to radiation. Fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic materials and blood borne pathogens are also occasionally exposed to employees. While performing daily job duties, every officer takes the risk of bodily harm, serious bodily harm or death. Officers come in contact with individuals who are mentally unstable, may have a criminal record, and who may be armed and dangerous.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of: law enforcement procedures and requirements; community policing and incident command procedures; Federal, State and local laws; law enforcement safety precautions and procedures; search and seizure laws; non-violent crisis intervention; Ohio Revised Code; court proceedings; English word usage, spelling, sentence structure and punctuation; computer software, programs and applications. Skill in: verbal and written communications; writing incident and accident reports; mediating and peacefully resolving conflicts; interviewing and communicating with students, faculty and general public; application of job software programs. Ability to: exercise sound judgment in dealing with stressful situations; comprehend oral and written information; maintain mandatory training; work independently demonstrating initiative; develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, supervisors, job contacts and general public; maintain confidential and sensitive information; assess and react appropriately to medical emergencies; perform physical demands and exhibit mental aptitude needed to perform law enforcement duties including pursuing and maintaining control of suspects, fights, and controlling criminal activity; recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate action; deal sensitively with persons of varying cultures and diversity; determine appropriate situations for use of force; function in adverse conditions and maintain self-control; implement training programs that are appropriate and educational.

Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED with Ohio Peace Officer Training Certification. State Motor Vehicle Operator’s License. Employee must be insurable to operate a vehicle, as a condition of initial and continued employment.

Preferred Qualifications: CPR and First Aid certification.

Additional Information: The position requires successful completion of a knowledge and personality assessment, background investigation, reference check, polygraph examination, psychological examination, and pre-employment medical examination.
