Potomac State College, part of the West Virginia University system of campuses, is seeking qualified candidates for a Campus Police Officer. This position is responsible for establishing and maintaining a safe atmosphere for the faculty, staff, students, and visitors at Potomac State College by providing police and security services.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
Patrol all PSC campus areas, both on foot and in patrol vehicle, to observe persons and property within assigned jurisdiction in efforts of reducing and preventing criminal activities.
Check and/or secure all buildings located on the PSC campus, staying alert for situations of deficiencies that make the college campus vulnerable to crime and correct and/or report noted deficiencies.
Assist the College community and general public on ways to make themselves more secure from criminal activities.
Patrol designated campus areas during special events, such as sporting events, club-sponsored activities, and other similar gatherings that draw large crowds; direct traffic and provide crowd control for such events.
Enforce all State and College laws, rules, and regulations, including all campus traffic and parking regulations.
Make arrests in accordance with departmental arrest policies; recognize and apprehend wanted persons, wanted automobiles, and stolen property.
Investigate criminal complaints and both traffic and non-traffic accidents in conjunction with the investigative unit by collecting and preserving evidence, interviewing witnesses and interrogating suspects, searching records, and surveillance activities.
Watch for fires, fire hazards, safety hazards, and other dangerous situations, and take appropriate action when water leak, chemical spill, or other related hazardous condition is detected.
Assist the general campus community and public by answering inquiries, providing directions, and other similar service activities.
Testify in court or College hearings to knowledge of or actions taken in regard to matters of interest to courts or PSC.
Administer first aid to injured or sick persons and provide or arrange for necessary transportation.
Work Hours: Varied
Pay Grade: 16
Associates degree required in criminal justice or related field
Law enforcement experience preferred
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered
Preference will be given to individuals who have completed WV Basic Law Enforcement Academy
Current knowledge of WV State Laws relating to public safety and the ability to rapidly learn College and Department of Public Safety policies and procedures
Ability to accurately operate a firearm
Ability to drive defensively
Knowledge of and ability to perform defensive tactics to protect self and others
Ability to react quickly in emergency situations
Current knowledge of police practices and philosophies
Completion of WV Basic Law Enforcement Academy within one (1) year
Must be bondable upon background check
Valid WV driver’s license
Successful physical agility testing prior to final offer
