Reporting to the Financial Vice President and Treasurer, the core mission of the Executive Director, Public Safety & Chief of Police is to monitor, assess, and lead long-term University-wide community safety and security planning, serve as the head of the Boston College Police Department, and manage the Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S), and Emergency Management & Preparedness departments. In this highly visible role, the Executive Director will collaborate with, and serve as an advisor to the senior executive leadership of Boston College on key safety and security issues, community policing initiatives, ensure compliance with EH&S rules and regulations, and adhere to policies and procedures for campus-wide disaster resiliency. The Executive Director will provide leadership and expertise in the further development and implementation of comprehensive University safety programs to support the educational mission, strategic objectives, and Jesuit, Catholic dimensions of Boston College.
Salary: commensurate with relevant experience.
Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public or Business Administration, or a related field is required;
Master’s degree is preferred.
Minimum of ten plus years of progressively responsible management experience in law enforcement
administration, and at least five years of experience in college/university law enforcement.
Must meet all requirements for certification under Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 22C, Section 63 as a Special State Police Officer and be warranted to receive police powers by the Massachusetts State Police Licensing Unit, including valid MA driver’s license and a valid Class A license to carry a firearm in accordance with MGL Ch. 140 Sec. 131.
Strong leadership and problem-solving skills, and an ability to engage in strategic planning, program
development, and manage organizational change are required.
Knowledge of best practices and industry standards relating to the security of institutions of higher education is essential.
Serve as liaison on all public safety and security matters both on and off campus.
Form partnerships with the community, neighbors, municipal bodies, local, state, and federal law
enforcement agencies, and key personnel at other universities.
