Chief of Police
$ 54,112 – 57,359, depending on experience. Plus excellent fringe benefits
Required: Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration or related field, from an accredited institution of higher learning. Minimum Work Experience – at least ten (10) years of sworn law enforcement experience with five (5) years progressive leadership responsibility at supervisor or command level; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved. Possession of AZ POST certification or equivalent out-of-state certification; must obtain AZ POST certification within six (6) months of hire date. Must successfully pass comprehensive background check and Peace Officer Physical Aptitude Test (POPAT). Possession of Arizona type D driver’s license is required upon employment.
Preferred: Master’s Degree and experience in higher education and/or community policing.
SUMMARY OF FUNCTION:
The Chief of Police is responsible for the implementation of operational and strategic planning, direction of sworn law enforcement operations, day-to-day operations, planning, supervision, and review of all department activities and personnel. Plan, direct, and supervise the functions of providing safety and security for all college personnel, students, visitors as well as the physical security of all college buildings, grounds, property and some consortium facilities. Responsible for budget development and administration. Work requires considerable judgment in the interpretation and application of rules, regulations, laws, and ordinances.
Plan, coordinate, and direct the operations of campus police department and staff, including campus security personnel. Conduct performance evaluations, coordinate trainings and implement hiring, discipline and termination procedures. Plans, organizes, supervises, and evaluates the work of staff. Monitors, reviews and approves all daily activity logs and incident reports.
Develops and implements security procedures for the protection of all district physical facilitates. Establishes and administers the AWC/NAU/ASU/U of A in Yuma Emergency Response program.
Maintains close liaison with other area law enforcement agencies, emergency response entities and judicial offices.
Prepare and monitor department’s budget, assist with budget development, identify needs and make recommendations.
Ensure Police Department and employees meet all state requirements to maintain Peace Officer status and are in compliance with Arizona Peace Officers’ Standard and Training Board (AZ POST). Ensure the Department is in compliance with all applicable federal, state and local laws, to include Clery Act Compliance.
Develops and updates public safety procedures and protocols.
Maintain certification of AZ POST and perform duties of a peace officer.
Support and participate in strategic initiatives and perform other duties as assigned.
